Early life and discovery

Kloss was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Tracy (née Fares) and Kurt Kloss, an emergency physician. Her family has Danish roots. She has three siblings, Kristine, and twins Kimberly and Kariann. She moved to St. Louis, Missouri, with her family, in 1994. Kloss has called her classical ballet training "a beautiful thing" that taught her how to move in the modeling world and was a great training ground for her runway walk. Kloss was "discovered at a local benefit runway show". She attended Webster Groves High School.

2006–10: Beginnings and modelling breakthrough
At the beginning of her career in 2006, Kloss posed for photographer David Leslie Anthony for a 12-page editorial and cover for Scene Magazine in Chicago. Elite Chicago then forwarded these tear sheets to Elite NY, who then brought Kloss to New York.

One of her first modelling stints was for Abercrombie when she posed for the brand's photography shot by Bruce Weber. In January 2008 she left Elite and signed with NEXT Model Management. She ended up walking 31 runways in New York Fashion Week notably, closing for Marc Jacobs, opening Carolina Herrera, and occupying both spots at Doo.Ri. After New York she went on to walk 20 shows in Milan, and 13 in Paris for the fall 2008 collections, with a total of 64 shows in a single season. Kloss found herself in the middle of a legal dispute when her former agency Elite Model Management sued NEXT Model Management for allegedly stealing its young star by offering her "improper compensation" to sign. Elite felt they were responsible for launching her career and booked much work for her. The case was eventually settled out of court.
After four years of being represented by Next Model Management, Kloss is now signed with IMG Models. "Karlie has an immense and loyal following, and we welcome the opportunity to help expand her relationships through endorsements as well as our global network that reaches beyond fashion", said Ivan Bart, IMG Models' senior vice president and managing director.
She was named the best model by People magazine in 2008. Kloss, labeled her famed runway walk a "moody gait". Molly Sims, whom she considers a mentor, told New York she thinks Kloss is the type of model who will still "do well at 30" because of her classic look.
She has been in advertisements for Jean Paul Gaultier, Donna Karan, Nina Ricci, Chloé, Lacoste, Sportmax, Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Elie Saab, Dolce & Gabbana, Gap, Bally Shoe, Bergdorf Goodman, Pringle of Scotland, Dior, Hermes, Oscar de la Renta, Sonia Rykiel, Aquascutum, Topshop, Eryn Brinie, Uniqlo, Omnia Jade, Lord & Taylor, Barneys New York, American Eagle, and Victoria's Secret PINK. Kloss is the face of the Marc Jacobs fragrance Lola. She has walked for numerous designers in New York, London, Milan and Paris, including Shiatzy Chen, Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Givenchy, Gucci, Valentino, Louis Vuitton and Versace, Elie Saab and appeared in editorials for American and Korean W, American Elle, Allure, i-D, French and Japanese Numéro, Vanity Fair, Dazed & Confused, and American, Australian, Italian, French, British, Korean, German, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Portuguese, Teen, and Latin American Vogue magazines. Her covers include Italian Vogue in October 2009, January 2010, and December 2011, Vogue Turkey, Vogue Portugal, Vogue China in February, August, and November in 2010, British Vogue in September 2012, Vogue Korea and American Teen Vogue, alongside Chanel Iman and Ali Michael in February 2008 and by herself in May 2010. She has ventured into TV when she appeared in Season Four, Episode 1 of Gossip Girl as herself. She has become a muse for fashion designer John Galliano and has appeared in Dior and John Galliano campaigns and opened both shows, Christian Dior Haute Couture and Dior resort shows from spring summer 2010. In the Spring/Summer 2011 Season, she opened 10 shows and closed 8.
2011–present: Recognition and success

Her runway walk, one of the most unique, is often described as powerful. In February 2011, supermodel Tyra Banks stated that Kloss was one of her favorite models because of her "unique, atypical beauty".
In 2011 Kloss renewed her contract with Christian Dior for the third season in a row. The same year, she made her debut in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
In 2012 Kloss is featured on the September covers of British Vogue, Japanese Vogue, Harper's Bazaar Russia, and Numéro. She appeared in the campaign ads of Juicy Couture, Stefanel, Elie Saab, and Jean Paul Gaultier. She co-hosted with the revival of the MTV series House of Style with fellow model Joan Smalls. She also appeared in that year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
In 2013, Kloss was the face of Donna Karan, Lacoste, and Lanvin campaigns. Kloss worked with Victoria's Secret on their 2013 summer swimwear video. She was also the red carpet host of the 2013 MTV Movie Awards pre-show. In April, Kloss starred alongside Daria Strokous, Monika Jagaciak and Iris Strubegger in Louis Vuitton's Alma bag campaign.

Personal life

Her hobbies include baking cookies, biking, and ballet.
In collaboration with Momofuku Milk Bar, she created a special recipe called Karlie's Kookies, which she sold in DKNY Soho during Fashion's Night Out in New York City, with proceeds benefiting hungry children around the world (through FEED Projects). She calls it a "Perfect 10 Cookie", because it contains dark chocolate and almond oat (dairy-free, gluten-free, and no sugar added).

Transforming Kids' Behavior With Computers

Transforming Kids' Behavior With Computers:
(100_0256 (Photo credit: Cesari)
In the world of social enterprise, Alice Ray is a survivor. She founded her seven-employee company Ripple Effects more than 15 years ago  and, despite ups and downs, she’s as enthusiastic as ever about her software system’s ability to help curb violent or anti–social behavior in kids.
Call it computer as shrink. Or a non-judgmental, yet sympathetic grown-up. That’s a better description.
Basically, her product, called the Whole Spectrum Learning System, aims to help school-age kids who are acting out deal with their problems. But they do so by using an interactive software system, not by talking to the principal, whom they probably don’t trust, or the school psychologist, whom they probably distrust even more.
Your eyes may be glazing over right about now, but the system seems to work. For example, in one recent study, students who used the system for two hours a week instead of attending certain classes, got better grades than a control group who had instruction in math and language arts during the same period.
There are three levels. The first, and most popular, goes something like this: Suppose three ninth graders are sent sent to the principal’s office for talking back to their teachers. Turns out, each has his or her own reason for the behavior–one saw her step-father beat up her mother that morning and her teacher was the most accessible adult to lash out at, another is dyslectic and refused to read out loud, fearing his classmates’ scorn, while another has discovered the behavior gives me him a kind of street cred.
But instead of simply putting the kids in detention, the school does something else. It sends each of these high schoolers to a computer and they get started on a tutorial. What they don’t realize is that the program is aimed at finding out what’s really motivating their behavior and helping them learn how to cope. Through questions and prompts, the kid with an abusive step-father might be led to a series of videos showing how a peer dealt  with a similar problem, games, questions and discussions about abuse and how to respond to it, while another might wind up in a section about learning disorders.
Perhaps most important, the kids would learn how prevalent the  problem is–and it isn’t their fault. “It helps to lessen the burden,” says Ray. The material is organized according to seven core social and emotional abilities (i.e. “Understanding others”), each broken down into hundreds of training pieces (i.e. “body language) that can be combined into literally millions of combinations.
Some kids start changing their behavior simply by being offered the opportunity to engage in the exercise. Others need an introduction, something on the order of, “We thought there might be something causing you to behave in this way,” and to come back two or three times.
As for the other levels, the next is aimed at groups at risk for failure. These address a set of topics related to motivation, fear of success, goal setting and so on–make or break factors in learning success. Finally is a level aimed at anyone, developing social and emotional learning skills everyone needs. (Kids  tend to score higher on tests for things like empathy and problem -solving after using the system).
There’s also one for teachers.
According to Ray, for kids, interacting with a computer is a lot more effective than talking to an adult for reasons that seem obvious once you hear them.
It’s all about the anonymity. They don’t have to worry whether or not the expert system will be judgmental or angry or go back on a promise or any number of problems. But what they do get is the simple experience of being heard, something that’s probably new for them. If you’ve ever had, say, a four–year-old kid, you know  that just letting your children vent and see the respect you have for them is often enough to calm them down. This is much the same thing.
The program is in about 650 school districts but, says Ray with rare honesty, “We should be larger.” Still, after more than 15 years in business (and it’s profitable), she says, “We’ve beaten the odds.”

The Hottest Concerts Of Summer 2013

The Hottest Concerts Of Summer 2013:
Back in the British Invasion days of the 1960s, the rivalry was obvious: The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones. The nice lads vs. the bad boys, at least until the Beatles developed a late-60s spooky side and John Lennon got all angry and political.
Today, the Beatles are long gone, while the Stones continue to march on in almost timeless fashion. Their biggest rivals for commanding the most bucks on tour this summer: One Direction, the British-Irish boy band whose main man, Harry Styles, could be Mick Jagger’s grandson.
The new British Invasion rivalry pits the Stones’ 50th anniversary tour, dubbed “50 Years and Counting,” against today’s teen heartthrobs, a quintet put together a few years ago on the X-Factor.  Whose concerts are commanding higher prices?
The winner is … the Rolling Stones. By a nose. Tickets for the old rockers’ historic tour are going for $637.50 online, on average, according to, a website that compiles price data among multiple online resellers. One Direction, the quintet born a few years ago on the X-Factor, places a close second at $624.23. And if it isn’t bad enough losing out to a bunch of old men, Styles’ ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift, has been hanging on stage with Jagger and lending her voice to some of the anniversary shows.
In what may be a sign of optimism for the economy, prices for summer concert tickets are up this year. No tour during the summer of 2012 averaged more than $230 per ticket (though plenty of individual seats at various venues went for far more).  The greatest demand last year was for country crooner Keith Urban and various baby boomer/older Gen X acts like Madonna, Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen.
Full List: The Summer’s Most Expensive Concerts
This year’s hot shows bring a more balanced mix of old and new. In addition to the Stones, the top 10 by prices include  Paul McCartney ($273 average — at least the Beatles still have a competitive rep), who will play four baseball stadiums this summer, including Fenway Park; the Eagles ($312 average); and Fleetwood Mac ($270). But the teen set is in the game, too. One Direction, which has already announced a follow up stadium tour for 2014, owns the nine most expensive shows on tour this summer: the band’s dates in Montreal, Houston and Dallas are all commanding over $1,000 a seat, on average, even as their overall tour average trails the Stones just slightly.
Another idol of the young  raking it in: Pink (née Alecia Beth Moore), a favorite of the teen-20s  crowd, is doing 140 dates this year that are fetching $300 a pop on the secondary market. She’ll spend the summer leg of the tour in Australia, where some expect her to break concert attendance records.
Don’t expect a “50 Years and Counting” tour from One Direction in 2060. Boy Bands don’t have those kinds of legs. But they will be able to tell their grandkids they once gave the Rolling Stones a run for their money.
